Application
Supercapacitors for Automotive Electronics
eCall, door-lock and telematics backup, and start-stop assistance.
Power requirements
Vehicle electronics may need backup if the main battery is disconnected (e.g. after a crash), or support during cranking voltage dips.
Why supercapacitors fit
Supercapacitors tolerate wide temperature ranges and high cycle counts; they are used where a short, guaranteed energy reserve is needed.
Selection factors
- Applicable automotive qualification (e.g. AEC-Q200 where required) — confirm on the specific datasheet
- Vibration and mechanical fixing
- Temperature range −40 °C and above
- Load dump and transient protection
Limitations
- Automotive qualification must be verified per model — do not assume it
Supercapacitor types
Radial-Lead Supercapacitors
Through-hole cylindrical cells for PCB mounting, typically from about 0.5 F to around 100 F.
